“Then he said to the host who invited him, “When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors, in case they may invite you back and you have repayment...” (Luke 14:12.)
In commenting on this verse from today’s Gospel, Saint Irenaeus of Lyons writes:
“Where are the hundredfold rewards in this age for the dinners offered to the poor? These things will be during the times of the kingdom, on the seventh day that is sanctified when God rested from all his works that he made. This is the true sabbath of the just, in which they will have no earthly work to do, but will have a table prepared before them by God, who will feed them with all kinds of delicacies.” (Against Heresies, 5.)

Preserve in the midst of Your people,
we ask, O Lord,
the Spirit with which You filled
the Bishop Saint Charles Borromeo,
that Your Church may be constantly renewed
and, by conforming Herself
to the likeness of Christ,
may show His face to the world.
Who lives and reigns with You
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
we ask, O Lord,
